AbstractThe reaction of solvated electron with methyl acrylate (MA) in N-2-saturated ethanol solution has been studied by gamma-radiolysis and guise radiolysis. The result shows that solvated electron can add to methyl acrylate and produce the corresponding radical anion which shows a maximum UV absorbance band at 280 nm. The epsilon(max) of radical anion of methyl acrylate is 1.4 x 10(3) mol(-1) dm(3)cm(-1). The rate constant of buildup of radical anion of methyl acrylate is 1.2 x 10(10) mol(-1) dm(3) s(-1). The decay of radical anion is induced by the protonation which contains a second-order reaction and a pseudo first-order reaction. The rate constants of decay are 4.8 x 10(10) mol(-1) dm(-3) s(-1) for second-order reaction and 8.3 x 103 s(-1) for pseudo first-order reaction, respectively. The effect of acetaldehyde on the decay of radical anion of methyl acrylate has also been investigated. The result demonstrates that the decay of radical anion of methyl acrylate is independent of the concentration of acetaldehyde, which indicates that electron transfer between radical anion of methyl acrylate and acetaldehyde does not occur.
