AbstractIndividual DNA molecules were firstly stretched by a liquid flow and adsorbed on a modified mica surface. A second liquid flow was then guided across the surface along a direction perpendicular to the aligned DNA strands. Some catenary-like nano-patterns of DNA molecules were formed, which were revealed by an atomic force microscope. A physical mechanism called "s-suspension bridge" model has been presented, by which the features of the catenary-like patterns of DNA molecules could be quite well understood quantitatively. Our work indicates that for manipulatiing individual DNA molecules the classical elastic mechanics is sufficient to describe and to control the formation of two-dimensional patterns of DNA molecules.
