Cross-like cubic ZnxMg1-xO nanostructures

AbstractCross-like cubic ZnxMg1-xO nanostructures were synthesized by a simple, catalyst-free thermal evaporation method. ZnxMg1-xO nanostructures were single crystalline with branches growing along the (2 0 0) direction. The Zn-Mg atomic ratio was about 23 : 77 in individual nanostructures. The synthesis actually included two procedures: the initial formation of a hexagonal ZnxMg1-xO seed layer with a low Mg content and the following growth of cubic ZnxMg1-xO nanostructures with a high Mg content. A first-principles study revealed that both the electronic and crystal structures of cubic ZnxMg1-xO are very different from either ZnO or MgO. Combining with the methods shown before, this work will make intentional synthesis of ZnxMg1-xO nanomaterials with variable composition achievable.
