AbstractWe report on an insitu study of structure evolution by electron irradiation in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The starting material is a nanostructured BN sample produced by N+ ion bombardment. It should be emphasized that both fullerence-like and hairpin-like structures are a result of electron irradiation-induced solid-state phase transformation in the BN material. We have observed some nano-particles and curled objects that might be the precursor of initial stage of BN nanoformation. A kinetic model for electron irradiation-induced formation of the BN fullerenes and hairpins is given.
