AbstractLaB6-ZrB2 eutectic composites were grown by the floating zone technique using electric are fusion and electron bombardment methods. Well-oriented microstructures were obtained in the central part of the specimens by these two methods. Bead ripple pattern occurred in the outer layer of the specimens prepared by electric are fusion, and a ZrB2 depletion layer developed in the surface of the specimens prepared by electron beam melting. No microstructural coarsening was observed after annealing the specimens at 1650 degrees C in N-2 for 100 h. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
